MISSION STATEMENT

The Tri County Youth Football League was formed for the purpose of providing youth football in a hospitable environment.

The adopted philosophy of the Tri County Youth Football League is "Athletes First - Winning Second".  By this statement we mean that every decision you make as a town should first be in the best interest of your athletes, and second in the desire to win.

It shall be the general purpose of this league to accept townships from Bergen, Passaic and Morris Counties with a population of less than 15,000 residents and/or Group I and Group II size towns.

TCYFL offers all players in grades 1-8 the opportunity to participate in an organized, supervised, competitive football program.

FLEX FOOTBALL

The TCYFL recognizes a need to bridge the gap between traditional flag football and tackle football.  FLEX football does just that -- it is a flag game, but allows players to learn proper fundamentals of tackle football in a flag football format with absolutely NO tackling!  The players will have the safety of full equipment with an adaptive rule book to create a FLEX football game which is fun and competitive as an introduction to the great game of football.

Flex teams are optional but very strongly encouraged. Flex is for players in the 2nd grade and younger.

FLEX football is FLAG football, played with traditional tackle football equipment. FLEX football attempts to instill the same values of a traditional tackle football program – hard work, teamwork & discipline to name a few.

COMPETITIVE LEVELS

The Seniors, Juniors and Pee Wees are competitive levels. Within each of these levels of play an A/B program is maintained to provide an appropriate playing environment for all skill levels.

"A" Team is the competitive team.  Team records and standings are maintained.  Post season Play Offs are held and League Championships are determined for each Age Group.  Coaches are required to designate a certain number of players, based on the total number of players on their roster as "A" players.  These players are ineligible to participate in "B" games.

Each member is required to field an "A" Team at the Pee Wee, Junior and Senior level.

Developing individual self-esteem, sportsmanship and skills are the hallmark of our "B"  Programs.  Having "B" Programs provides all players with an opportunity to play more than just a few plays.  The "B"  Programs are instructional in nature. These programs enable the younger and less experienced players to have their time on the field.  No records or standings are kept and NO championships or trophies are awarded.  "B" teams are optional but very strongly encouraged if the member has over 22 players at any level.

TCYFL HISTORY

For several years prior to the 2010 founding of the Tri-County Youth Football League, the five founding programs, Kinnelon, Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock, Pequannock, and Pompton Lakes were part of the North Jersey Junior Football League.  The NJJFL had grown to a league of sixteen teams, comprised of two divisions and a mix of large and small programs.

The larger towns like Ridgewood, the two Wayne teams and Mahwah dwarfed the smaller towns in population and participating players and made it impossible to compete consistently.  All attempts at rule changes to level the playing field failed.  So, in 2010 a few of the towns, led by Bob Lull, Ted Bielen, Dave Shafer, Kevin O'Connor and George Douglas, representing the founding programs began to organize a new league that would be comprised of towns with populations of less than fifteen thousand persons.

It was felt that limiting the size of the programs to these levels would encourage parity within the league, leaving the success of any given team contingent on program management and athletic skill.  And that philosophy has proven successful to date, as illustrated by the variety of champions among the TCYFL programs over the years since its founding.

Today, the TCYFL includes ten teams, judiciously adding programs meeting the population and fair play standards that are valued by its members.  The league will continue to invite like programs to join its membership going forward as that expansion best serves the needs of the member programs and the betterment of competition and development of the participating athletes.
